World Day for Safety and Health at Work: Safety is our Top Value at Nexus
Each year on April 28, the World Day for Safety and Health at Work serves as a global reminder that workplace safety is a fundamental right, not just a benefit. Established by the International Labor Organization (ILO), the day brings together governments, employers, and workers to reflect on occupational health and safety, honor those affected by workplace incidents, and recommit to prevention.
At Nexus Engineering Group, this message aligns directly with how we operate every day. Safety isn’t just a requirement—it is our top priority and one of our six core values. From design through construction and into operations, we put safety first in everything we do because protecting our people, partners, and communities always comes first.
"Safety is not a program or a checklist—it’s a value that guides every decision we make. As an EPCm firm, our responsibility goes beyond design and delivery; it’s about protecting the people on our projects, the partners we work alongside, and the communities our work serves"
Safety Built into Everything We Do
From the beginning, Nexus has taken a proactive, prevention‑focused approach to workplace safety. The first 20 years of our business were recordable‑injury free. This milestone reflects our commitment to thoughtful planning, strong training, and accountability at every level.
Today, that commitment continues with 100% safety training compliance in 2026, ensuring every Team member is equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to work safely.
“Our job is to constantly ask: what more can we do to protect people? That question drives how we design, how we operate, and how we lead.”
Inherently Safer Design: Eliminating Risk at the Source
A cornerstone of Nexus’s approach is Inherently Safer Design (ISD), a philosophy that focuses on eliminating or reducing hazards at the source rather than relying solely on add‑on safeguards. By prioritizing strategies such as elimination, substitution, moderation, and simplification early in the design process, ISD reduces both the likelihood and severity of incidents.
Incorporating ISD leads to simpler, more robust systems and stronger safety performance throughout the full lifecycle of a facility. This proactive mindset allows safety to be engineered into projects from day one, supporting both physical safety and long‑term operational reliability.
Empowering Team Members Through Stop Work Authority
At Nexus, a safe workplace is a shared responsibility. Every Team member is empowered with Stop Work Authority, meaning anyone can pause work if conditions feel unsafe or tasks are unclear. Work resumes only after hazards are eliminated or adequately controlled to the satisfaction of all those involved.
This policy reinforces that trust, accountability, and open communication are key elements of a strong safety culture. It sends a clear message: no schedule, deliverable, or deadline is more important than someone’s well‑being.
Training, Reporting, and Continuous Improvement
Nexus maintains comprehensive safety procedures and training programs designed to prevent incidents before they occur. Our approach includes:
- Incident and near‑miss reporting to identify risks early and prevent recurrence.
- Structured site visit procedures to ensure compliance with client‑specific safety requirements before any on‑site work begins.
- Monthly safety bulletins shared with the entire Team to reinforce awareness, seasonal risks, and best practices.
By combining clear expectations with transparent reporting and ongoing communication, we continuously strengthen our workplace safety.
Looking Ahead: Safety for Today and Tomorrow
The World Day for Safety and Health at Work also highlights emerging challenges, including mental health, evolving work models, and increasing project complexity. At Nexus, we recognize that safety includes both physical and mental well‑being. Our policies, training, and leadership commitment reflect a holistic view of health and safety that supports people in speaking up, looking out for one another, and working in environments designed for success.
As we observe World Day for Safety and Health at Work, we reaffirm what guides us year‑round: safety is not just a priority—it is a value we live by.
"At Nexus, our leadership team is committed to a proactive, people centered approach to a safe workplace that places Team member well being first. We believe strong safety performance is achieved through visible leadership involvement, meaningful employee engagement, and accountability at all levels of the organization. Our behavior based safety programs, near miss reporting, and stop work authority are intentionally designed to empower employees to identify hazards, address unsafe conditions, and intervene before incidents occur. By reinforcing these expectations and leading by example, Nexus continues to build a culture of care where safety is a core value, and every Team member is supported in going home safe each day."
