Overview
A major Midwest power company plays a critical role in delivering reliable electricity across multiple states, supporting residential customers, commercial operations, and essential infrastructure that drives regional economic stability and growth. Ensuring transmission reliability and safety of its network is vital to maintaining uninterrupted power delivery and meeting evolving regulatory and operational requirements.
To support these objectives, Nexus Engineering Group was engaged to provide as-built data verification and Right of Way Engineering (ROW) Assurance services as part of a large-scale, multi-assignment transmission program. The program focused on validating existing field conditions, reviewing transmission line data, and identifying potential clearance or compliance concerns across a wide portfolio of assets.
The primary goal of the project was to deliver consistent, technically defensible engineering reviews across numerous concurrent work orders while maintaining visibility into schedule, quality, and deliverables. Services were executed under a time-and-material framework to support ongoing program needs and flexibility as additional assignments were issued.
Challenge
The ROW Engineering Assurance & as-built verification program introduced several operational and technical challenges that required a disciplined and scalable approach.
High-Volume, Concurrent Assignments
The program required the Nexus team to manage and execute multiple transmission line assignments simultaneously. Each assignment involved review of PLS-CADD models, LiDAR and as-built data, structure information, wire data, and clearance results—requiring consistent processes across all efforts.
Condensed Schedules and Client Expectations
The team was expected to meet a tight schedule due to a turnaround window while delivering accurate, technically sound results. Maintaining quality while responding quickly to client-driven deadlines required strong internal coordination and prioritization.
Data Integration and Verification Complexity
Engineering reviews required validation of multiple data inputs—including field conditions, modeled data, and historical records—introducing complexity in verifying accuracy and identifying discrepancies.
Program Scalability and Tracking
As additional assignments were issued over time, the team needed to scale efficiently while maintaining clear visibility into assignment status, QA/QC workflows, and delivery commitments across the program.
Solution
Nexus addressed these challenges by implementing a structured, scalable delivery model designed specifically for high-volume transmission line programs.
At the core of the solution was the development of a dedicated transmission line engineering team supported by a practical tracking and review process. This framework enabled real-time visibility into assignment progress, internal review status, QA/QC requirements, and client delivery timelines
The engineering workflow was standardized to ensure consistency and technical rigor across all assignments. This included:
-
- PLS-CADD model review and validation
- Structure and wire data verification
- Clearance evaluation and compliance checks
- Drawing and model reviews
- Preparation of clear, client-ready summaries
Potential violations or areas requiring further evaluation were clearly documented, enabling the client to efficiently assess mitigation requirements and prioritize next steps.
Where clearance concerns were identified, Nexus was also positioned to support follow-on mitigation evaluation, including conductor derating, structure height adjustments, attachment modifications, span-specific operating restrictions, and other practical design alternatives to help resolve clearance concerns.
In parallel, Nexus maintained frequent internal and client coordination to align priorities, schedules, and expectations. This collaborative approach allowed the team to respond quickly to urgent needs while maintaining consistent quality across all deliverables.
Through this structured and adaptive approach, Nexus successfully supported a high-volume ROW Assurance program while strengthening its position as a responsive and reliable transmission line engineering partner.
