Nexus Engineering Group Continues Profitable Growth Despite Challenging Year

Wood blocks with 2020 turning to 2021

Company achieved 12% growth in 2020 while making smart investments in its future

CLEVELAND – Nexus Engineering Group LLC, a full-service, independent engineering firm focused on the refining, midstream, chemical, energy, and manufacturing industries, grew 12% in annual revenue in 2020 and added 30 new team members, despite downward economic pressures caused by the worldwide pandemic. Heading into 2021, the firm has positioned itself for continued success as it prepares to support its clients with anticipated infrastructure and energy initiatives this coming year.

Building capabilities
Nexus strengthened and expanded relationships with key clients in 2020, completing several major projects at both refining and chemical facilities throughout the midwest. The company also invested in engineering talent to support the expansion of its energy services offering to clients producing and using electrical energy–an area Nexus expects to grow significantly in 2021.

“During a tough year for our industry and our clients, we developed new capabilities and broadened our expertise through strategic hires,” said Jeff Herzog, Founding Partner and President of Nexus Engineering Group. “We also expanded our presence in Toledo and Canton, Ohio to better serve our clients across the region,” said Herzog.

Responding to COVID
The firm achieved this success amidst the disruption and uncertainty caused by the worldwide pandemic, and it sustained benefits and pay for its team without relying on layoffs, furloughs or PPP loans. Nexus pivoted quickly to remote operations, leveraging a strong technological foundation to continue delivering the level of service and insights their clients expect. The firm invested in new collaboration technology, and it offered team members additional resources to promote their physical and mental health. Nexus also supported team member-led initiatives to give back to their communities, including matching a company-wide fundraiser for nonprofits battling childhood hunger and poverty.

Investing in talent
Nexus grew its team by more than 20% in 2020, adding talent and experience throughout Cleveland, Maumee, Canton, and the upper Midwest. Continuing to diversify the firm by identifying and developing earlier career professionals and maintaining its strong entrepreneurial culture in a period of significant growth are important multi-year initiatives.

“We are committed to attracting the best engineering and client services talent at all stages of their career,” said Marianne Corrao, Founding Partner and Executive Vice President of Nexus Engineering Group. “It’s part of our culture to develop young professionals into the future leaders of our industry, and this helps Nexus balance our extensive industry experience with fresh thinking and approaches.”

Looking forward
Nexus is prepared to deliver for its clients as the industry slowly emerges from the pandemic. The firm’s priorities for 2021 include:

Helping clients improve their overall project performance

    • Further developing and implementing project controls systems and capabilities to increase predictability.
    • Applying proven methodologies and technologies to improve overall project performance by driving down controllable project costs and improving safety, quality, field labor productivity, and return on investment based on life cycle costs.
    • Leveraging technology and innovation to improve constructability planning and collaboration across the project team.

Supporting client’s environmental & carbon emissions goals

    • Helping clients that have announced major decarbonization goals by providing energy assessments and optimizations which could include co-generation, heat recovery, and additional gas separation & export.
    • Enabling projects that reduce carbon emissions, like connecting operations to renewable or lower carbon energy sources.
    • Providing necessary enhancements to the electrical infrastructure to ensure energy supply is reliable and dependable.

Offering specialized and technical support to enhance the client’s staff on site

Celebrating success
Finally, in addition to celebrating their 15th year in business since cofounding Nexus in 2005, cofounders Herzog and Corrao closed out 2020 with a pair of awards recognizing their contributions to the industry and NE Ohio business community. Herzog received the 2020 Smart 50 award, recognizing the top executives of the 50 smartest companies in the Northeast Ohio region, and Corrao earned Women of Note recognition from Crain’s Cleveland Business for demonstrating “exceptional commitment to Northeast Ohio” and a passion for mentoring young engineers.
