Nexus Engineering Group Achieves 25% Growth in 2021

The engineering firm deepened its relationships with existing clients and expanded its sustainability, renewable energy, and project services offerings.

Red blocks with 2022

CLEVELAND – Nexus Engineering Group LLC, a full-service, independent engineering firm focused on the refining, midstream, chemical, energy, renewables and manufacturing industries, grew 25% in annual revenue in 2021 and added 35 new team members in a record-breaking year for the company. The firm is now home to nearly 200 team members, and with its commitment to further expand its offerings and footprint across Ohio, Nexus is well-positioned for continued success in 2022 and beyond.

Deeper relationships

Nexus strengthened its relationships with key clients in 2021, completing several major projects at refining, chemical, and power generation facilities throughout the United States. These project included:

One of its most significant accomplishments was supporting its clients in achieving their carbon emissions goals by providing energy assessments and optimizations. These included co-generation, heat recovery, and enhancements to their electrical infrastructure. Nexus also took on new clients that specialize in renewable energy, a critical area of growth for 2022.

Enhanced project services capabilities

At the beginning of 2021, Nexus hired industry veteran Brendan Shanley to support the expansion of the company’s project services offering to its clients — an area Nexus plans to grow significantly in 2022. With Shanley’s help, Nexus has enhanced and expanded its capabilities to deliver project performance predictability and minimize execution surprises. The team has doubled in size and now offers its project and portfolio management services outside of Nexus-led engineering projects, helping clients with management and reporting from planning and design through procurement and construction.

“We saw an opportunity to meet a growing client need for holistic portfolio management and reporting,” said Jeff Herzog, Co-Founder and President of Nexus Engineering Group. “Under Brendan’s leadership, our project services team is supplementing and developing our clients’ in-house capabilities to ensure they’re investing in and successfully managing the highest value projects,” said Herzog.

Investment in Ohio

To maintain momentum and expand on its successes, in July 2021 Nexus announced plans with JobsOhio to grow the firm’s downtown Cleveland headquarters and its engineering operations in Maumee, Ohio. This long-term commitment to the state ensures the firm can best serve its regional clients while attracting and developing the industry’s best talent.

“It’s important to us that we give back to our community,” said Marianne Corrao, Co-Founder and Executive Vice President of Nexus. “We do that by attracting and retaining top engineering talent in Ohio, and and by mentoring and empowering the next generation of engineering and project management professionals.”

To support this growth, Nexus promoted Jason Didion to Engineering Manager in its Maumee operation, where the firm plans to add 30 new team members over the next three years. Didion’s added responsibilities include accountability for team development, execution of project delivery processes, and advancement of technical work practices for the Maumee office. He will collaborate across offices to drive the firm’s strategic growth and continuous improvement agenda.

Opportunities in 2022

In 2022, the firm expects to see further growth in services and capabilities that support their clients’ long-term strategic goals. These include:

Enhanced project services and controls to support the clients’ total project portfolio

  • Further expanding project services and controls offerings beyond Nexus-executed projects, allowing clients to leverage Nexus’ proven approach to manage their internal project portfolios.
  • Leveraging technology and innovation to improve constructability planning and collaboration across the project team.
  • Applying proven methodologies and technologies to improve overall project performance by driving down controllable project costs and improving safety, quality, field labor productivity, and return on investment based on life cycle costs.

Expertise in supporting environmental emissions goals and renewable energy projects

  • Helping clients that have announced major decarbonization goals by providing energy assessments and optimizations which could include co-generation, heat recovery, and additional gas separation, clean-up, compression, and export.
  • Enabling projects that reduce carbon emissions, like connecting operations to renewable or lower-carbon energy sources.
  • Providing necessary enhancements to the electrical infrastructure to ensure energy supply is reliable, dependable, and distributable.
  • Leveraging our process expertise to help renewable energy producers scale their operations.

The firm will be making a significant investment in talent acquisition and development in 2022. Nexus expects to significantly increase the number of interns and co-ops it employs, creating a pipeline for top engineering talent. This investment also includes refreshing its career development and management program to prepare its junior team members for leadership opportunities and to support newer managers with the skills and tools they need to be successful.
