Existing Client Growth, Expanded Services Fuel Nexus’s 2022 Success

Full-service engineering firm sees deeper demand for ESG, procurement, and construction management

February 2, 2023 (CLEVELAND, OHIO) – Nexus Engineering Group, LLC achieved another year of double-digit growth, adding 19% to its annual revenue in 2022. The full-service, independent engineering firm focused on the refining, midstream, chemical, energy, renewables and manufacturing industries added 25 new team members to increase its footprint to more than 200 professionals across its expanded Cleveland HQ, growing Maumee office, and newest location in Midland, Michigan. The firm attributes its successful year to strong existing client relationships, increasing demand for ESG program support, and growing service offerings, including end-to-end procurement and construction management.

Growing Existing Relationships

Expanded work with current clients in the industrial sector was a primary driver of growth for Nexus in 2022. Two noteworthy projects included the management of a major turnaround project that significantly boosted operational capacity for a long-running refinery client, and support for a global chemical manufacturer expanding its polymer production to meet a rise in demand for medical equipment and supplies.

“Our top priority has always been to help current clients solve their business problems and capitalize on market opportunities,” said Jeff Herzog, Co-Founder and President of Nexus Engineering Group. “Our understanding of their business helps us anticipate future needs and add to our offerings so we’re ready with answers.”

Sustainability + Energy Transformation Projects

Leveraging its investments in energy expertise, Nexus provided a wide range of services for emerging energy and sustainability projects in 2022, including:

Electrification and ESG initiatives by its valued customers are driving Nexus’s fast-growing emerging and electrical energy segments. The firm’s experience, technical savvy, and portfolio management expertise is helping clients model their project investment returns and risks so they can effectively prioritize sustainability projects within their broader project portfolio.

“More and more businesses are looking for support in assessing, planning and predictably executing their ESG agendas” said Marianne Corrao, Co-Founder and Executive Vice President. “As interest in sustainability accelerates, clients want to ensure that in addition to reducing their carbon footprint, their efforts are having a positive and sustainable impact on their business.”

Opportunities in 2023

Talent Acquisition + Development

The new year brings a greater focus on attracting top talent and developing internal resources to stay ahead of growing demand in a competitive employment market. The firm advanced its talent acquisition efforts in 2022 and doubled its number of internship and co-op program participants. This year’s focus will include an increased investment in onboarding, professional development, and cross-training, which will help the firm shape the engineering leaders of tomorrow.

Recognizing and applying transferable skills are particularly critical to supporting emerging energy markets. Fewer engineers and project managers have deep expertise in renewables and the cutting-edge technologies used for carbon dioxide emission reduction or capture, transformation of wind and solar energy into electricity, conversion of waste into fuel, and storage systems required for renewable energy. Early success in green energy projects continues to attract to Nexus the top talent looking to lead in this exciting and rapidly changing field.

Growth Markets and Geographic Expansion

In addition to its focus on energy, Nexus is investing further in its chemicals segment to support expected demand growth for chemical processing in construction, automotive, health and safety, electronics, and agribusiness. The firm joined the Ohio Chemistry Technology Council (OCTC) and the Michigan Chemistry Council (MCC) in 2022 to bring an engineering and design firm perspective to the advocacy groups for chemical processing.

Having opened its first Michigan location in October, Nexus also is eyeing expansion into Chicago to reach new markets and further support its Midwest clients.

Procurement and Construction Management

Nexus made significant advancements in its integrated services in 2022, adding project and portfolio management services outside of Nexus-led engineering projects. End-to-end procurement and construction management services will be a focus in 2023, solving supply chain challenges that can add uncertainty and increase total cost of ownership.

These services include:

  • Planning & Performance – Developing and monitoring a plan outlining the requirements and steps to obtain the necessary materials and services for a particular project, or a portfolio of projects
  • Sourcing & Contracting — Engaging the market with specific needs, evaluating offers, and selecting suppliers based on best value
  • Expediting — Proactive oversight and intervention to ensure materials are delivered on time with no defects
  • Contract Management — Driving compliance with contract terms, change management, and contractor performance expectations

“ROI modeling, managing capital expense more effectively across project portfolios, and continuously searching for greater efficiencies are no longer value-added services, but what clients expect from a full-service engineering partner,” said Brendan Shanley, Nexus’s Project Services Director. “Extending these services into procurement and construction management gives us more opportunity to help clients accomplish more with fewer resources and less effort.”
